Consider for recommendation to the Board of Commissioners a proposal to replace an existing historic greenhouse with a modern structure with similar specifications. |

On Monday, November 28, 2016 the Historical Commission recommended approval of the greenhouse replacement conditional upon submission of revised drawings, details, and photographs illustrating the product being proposed and how it interfaces with the existing potting shed (to remain). The Commission assumes in this approval that the interface will be nearly identical to what is there now, given, in particular, that the foundation will be re-used. The applicant has noted that stucco will be used to coat the repaired concrete block foundations, and the Commission also requests that the applicant clarify the color of the new metallic elements of the greenhouse, with staff to review this additional information. If staff does not find the additional information in keeping with the historic integrity, the applicant may return to the Commission for further review. The Commission further suggests salvaging the two existing four-light, two-panel doors, as well as submission to the Lower Merion Historical Society photographs of the greenhouse, capturing the overall form and detailing of the elements to be lost. The Commission would encourage the applicant to salvage and/or re-use (by themselves or others) the elements of the historic greenhouse that are commonly sought after. |
